je conseille de louer le film, en dessins numériques mais vrais acteurs, une façon innovante à l'époque comme pour ''300'', la bataille des Spartiates. Le dragon est affreux, Grendel, et sa mère , jouée par Angelina Jolie, est une superbe sorcière maléfique, extrêmement séduisante ,visqueuse, redoutable , un avant-goût de son rôle dans la version récente de Sleeping beauty, justement intitulée ''Maléfique''! emploi prédestiné.....(elle joue également la mère épouvantablement insidieuse d'Alexandre le grand,d'Oliver Stone, ça lui va très bien, belle , inquiétante,menaçante, dangereuse)

I have seen '300' and don't really enjoy the visual medium--it looks like a video game to me! Which isn't to say that that version of 'Beowulf' is bad. We'll see! Interesting that AJ should play such horrible mothers!

I just had to share this: I just read the description of a lovely and simple wedding where the recessional music was "Concerning Hobbits" by Howard Shore! Isn't that a great idea? :D

I'm just finishing up reading Tolkien's translation of Beowulf. I haven't read Beowulf since high school, so it has been quite a while, but I am impressed this time by how much it influenced LOTR. There are obvious parallels, but less obvious, maybe, is just the style of language and syntax, especially of the heroic cultures of Middle-earth. It's a beautiful book!

est-ce une édition spéciale, une autre façon de découvrir Boewulf?
Je suis d'accord que cela a beaucoup compté dans le travail de Tolkien, c'est évident, le sang viking a dû intervenir( clin d'oeil)

Tolkien's own translation, plus all his detailed lecture notes and marginalia, were just published by Christopher Tolkien. The book itself is just beautiful, with JRRT's drawing of a dragon on the cover. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if the translation is a good one, but it is certainly of a piece in style and language with LOTR, which makes it fun for us! I have been reading his essay 'Monsters and Critics' and I guess one question is whether Beowulf is Christian literature, and Tolkien's translation definitely answers that with a 'yes'.

The notes are quite detailed, giving the etymology of many words per sentence. I'm not sure I'm going to wade through that!

I've discovered some Tolkien writing I didn't know existed! At the end of the new Beowulf volume is a short story called Sellic Spell, which is "an attempt to reconstruct the Anglo-Saxon tale that lies behind the folk-tale element in Beowulf", according to JRRT. It's certainly not LOTR, but one can definitely tell it is Tolkien! Fun to read.

Il y a une nouvelle édition du ''Seigneur des Anneaux'' retravaillée , complétée selon les indications posthumes de RRTolkien proposées par Christopher, parue le 2 octobre en librairie en France, d'après la dernière version en anglais ,avec de très belles illustrations renumérisées d'Alan Lee( 18) et deux cartes en couleur de la Terre du Milieu, dans ce premier tome intitulé ''La Fraternité de l'Anneau''. Je me suis offert ce nouveau livre et vais de ce fait relire mon roman préféré en 3 épisodes suivant les prochaines parutions :clapping: :clapping: :D
