Happy New Year, everyone! Let's hope the Hot Stove League will help us learn more about Tolkien, among other goods, this year!

Je crois que vous êtes tous beaucoup plus érudits que moi au sujet de Tolkien et je prendrai plaisir à lire tout le contenu de vos réflexions mais je ne pense pas avoir suffisamment de connaissances pour participer, bien que j'adore tout ce qui le concerne. Je fête actuellement l'anniversaire du Professeur avec un bon apéritif devant mon ecran, tchin, tchin!!

You know, Michka, when I was in graduate school, there was a lapel button we used to give to people who completed their degrees that said, 'I'm eruditer than you', which is very bad English--hence the humor! I've always thought that, in Tolkien scholarship, it's not that some people are experts and others aren't. Tolkien is so complex that we're all learners!

On another topic, what has been going on in France is in all the headlines here in the US these days. Are these events touching you in any personal way?

Well, the Christmas gift my husband and I gave to ourselves is finally being installed today. The installation crew is putting in our new garage door and door opener system right now! Wheee!!!!

Enjoy your new door, Lindariel! I know it doesn't sound too interesting, but I just paid a small fortune to fix my garage door last year when I couldn't get my car out! So it's great to have that convenience and make life a little simpler.

We will certainly enjoy the new garage door, Merry. Our old one was probably installed when the house was built (circa 1976). It has been getting very cranky of late, and we knew that if we didn't replace it soon, we'd find ourselves one day unable to get the cars out of the garage! The new door is fully insulated, so it will help keep the house much warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, and the new opener is MUCH quieter! I didn't even hear my husband leave for work this morning, and usually the garage door opener wakes me up!

J'ai la désagréable impression que ce site ne fonctionne plus, si les interventions vont sur le forum VW ce n'est pas très grave , peut-être y a -t'il moins de centre d'intérêt pour Tolkien? Ou un autre site est plus ouvert? De même je continue d'aller sur 'L'oeil et la main' ,site sur l'art de Viggo, et personne ne me répond, mais je persiste à écrire mes petites infos et mes remarques, qui sait? Un visiteur peut un jour les lire et s'y intéresser....

Michka, we're trying the strategy Riv Res suggested, to concentrate the Tolkien discussions at VW for a while to see if we can gather a few more regular people posting in the same place for some momentum. Riv told me this weekend that she had a few more Tolkien ideas, so we'll see! When school is in session, I can't really devote any more time here, but maybe this summer. But it may also be the case that, since the last Hobbit movie has been out for a while, there will be less interested in sites like this. It'll be interesting to see of TOR.n and the rest of us survive! But for now, let's hang in there at VW.
