In addition, in some ways the Elves didn't consider this their fight. They were already leaving Middle-earth and this was to be the beginning of the Age of Men. But seems Elrond's boys had a few messages for Aragorn from their father. Maybe, as Lindariel points out, they liked fighting orcs! They may have also wanted to watch out for Aragorn on behalf of their sister.

I remember, on reading the books the first time, how relieved I was when the sons of Elrond and the Dunadain show up in Rohan. I thought Aragorn would at least have a chance with their help.

I think Elrond had to anticipate that there could be an attack upon Imladris from Gundabad, and that his realm would continue to be an important way-station for any Elves fleeing to Mithlond in advance of Sauron's forces, should Aragorn's campaign in Gondor NOT succeed. As Gandalf said, Elrond's realm would be the last to fall after all others had been overwhelmed. Elrond HAD to hold his army back for this purpose.

Here's an interesting point -- Imladris would be the last ELVEN realm to fall. Remember, at the Council of Elrond, they ALL agreed that BOMBADIL would be the very last of all inhabitants of Middle-earth to fall should Sauron regain his Ring, "Last as he was First," and then everlasting night would fall.

I've finished reading LOTR again this week and I'm studying the Appendices. I didn't recall before that Elrond had tried to establish himself in Eregion before settling in Rivendell. That may explain why he got along with dwarves a little better. And of course it explains why he could read their moon runes.

That's an interesting thought Merry. Perhaps he was not so put off by their rough ways because he was used to their way of being... dwarfs that is.

BTW, Do you want me to set up a thread for the Appendices in the Lotr forum? I was going to start to read them again myself and I may have some thoughts to share as well.

That would be great! I'm reading them now, too. Lots of interesting stuff there. I was reading last night about Castamir the Usurper and his nasty children.

Looks like I had better dust off the Appendices and join this conversation.
